The second showcase event at Edukick Manchester took place this week, and once again was a huge success with over 45 players involved and 5 of those being looked at further by professional or semi-professional clubs.

Warm up for the showcase event

Following on from the first Edukick showcase event in August where 4 players were invited to League 1 side Oldham Athletic for further training, the team in Manchester hosted the second showcase event for the Manchester Academy, the Ellesmere Academy and local players.

The day’s events kicked off with a talk from Edukick Manchester coach and former Manchester City Striker Jon Macken. Following the initial warm up the players were put through their paces by the Edukick coaches Chris, Jon and Head coach Nigel in a range of drills to help showcase their ability, understanding and coachability.

After a short lunch break the players were once again give advice from a former player who knows what clubs are looking for, ex Chelsea star Frank Sinclair. Frank then stayed on for the afternoon to watch the boys in action after he’d been an EduKick guest coach the week prior.

In attendance were several clubs from all different levels of football in the northwest including Blackpool FC, Blackburn Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday, Crewe Alexandra, Radcliffe Borough and Stockport Dynamos to name a few.

The whole day was a huge success with 5 players being highlighted by clubs for further watching.

Director Mick Brennan said “What a great day for players. Bringing all the players from both sites together has been fantastic, it adds to the quality of the event and gives the younger players something to aim for going forward seeing the 16+ lads in Manchester. We had a great turn out from the club representatives and scouts with some great feedback. This is only our second event of this type which we are looking to roll out regularly for our academy players and open it out more to local players. The whole day is geared towards giving these players an opportunity to showcase their ability to some influential people in the game. Some may be successful, many won’t be, but they all have that chance and opportunity along with the experience of the day. To have advice from people like Jon Macken and Frank Sinclair is just a massive bonus for the players too and a massive thank you to them both. Both have played at that top level so know what to expect and what it take. You can’t get better advice than that. We’ve had some great comments on the event from the clubs and about the conduct and ability of our academy players too, so well done to them all.”

The next showcase event will be in April in Manchester. This will be open to all players to book on and register for the day, a weeks training programme or a short residential stay with our academy. Don’t miss out on your opportunity to be involved. Places are limited so BOOK NOW.

    Richie Wellins

The players at the Ellesmere Academy site had another great guest session this week when former Manchester United and Leicester city start Richie Wellens visited the players. Richie, now a regular with the Edukick academy’s, spent the day at the Ellesmere site with the new intake of players on the academy. Starting with a question and answer session the boys were able to put to Richie all those burning questions about being a professional footballer, before he took to the field to coach them and share his vast knowledge of the game.

Richie is now first team coach at league two side Oldham Athletic, so who better to to out on the field with the players putting them through their paces. Richie started his football career at Manchester United before a move to Blackpool in 2000. following his time at Blackpool Richie moved

on to Doncaster then to the championship with former Premier league champions Leicester city. Richie then returned to Doncaster for 18 months before joining a team local to Ellesmere, Shrewsbury Town under the management of Micky Mellon. After his playing career ended Richie took up his coaching path which has successfully seen him gain a first team coaches roll at Oldham, a club he played for making over 100 appearances.

Having Richie at the academy training is a great opportunity for the boys to gain knowledge, talk first hand to someone who has worked hard to be successful in the game and to be coached by a top, pro club, first team coach.

Richie work a lot with our players in Manchester and has a great understanding of our ethos in the academy and brings genuine energy and great advice to the sessions he does. The players at Ellesmere would have been able to take a lot for the afternoon with him and hopefully we can get him along again soon to see their progress. A massive thanks to Richie for the session and talking with the players.”

In the coming weeks and terms there will be more guest session for the boys to experience, bringing different angles of the game and different opinions too, and everyone is a great opportunity to showcase their ability. its not everyday you get coaches by a pro clubs first team coach.

    Kyle visits the academy

This week the players at the new boarding school site at Ellesmere College were treated to a guest speaker to share his expert knowledge first hand with them. Kyle Wearing, Sports scientist with league two side Crewe Alexandra, came to the academy to talk to the players about his role at the club, the importance of sports science with professional players and take questions to help the players’ development.

Kyle, who has been to the Edukick academy on a few occasions, was formally a nutritionists at league one side Blackburn Rovers FC and has spoken to the Edukick players previously on correct diet and nutrition for the professional game. This time round the Ellesmere academy players got the best of both world, the understanding of sports science along with nutrition advice.

Guest sessions such as this are vital part of our academy development. Having current professionals from the top clubs in the area come in and talk first hand to the players gives them a great insight into the professional game and backs up all the work the coaches at the academy do on a daily basis. The player can use these session to review their own part they play in doing all they can to perform at the highest level.

Over the coming season we will have more guest speakers and coaches at the Academy sites to bring home professional football in the UK to the players.

Nigel talks to the ladsFriday 25th August 2017 saw the first EduKick Manchester independent showcase event, where all the players registered with the programme, along with some invited players from a local non-league side, got to show their ability to scouts and representatives from clubs around the northwest.

The afternoon kicked off with a guest session from Leicester City player Richie Wellens. Richie has been to the international academy on a number of occasions for guest coaching sessions, however on Friday it was an opportunity for him to prepare them for the up and coming showcase event, sharing with them his experiences of similar events when he was breaking into the professional game.

The session with Richie was a great opportunity in itself for the players. Richie is an English former professional footballer who primarily played as a central midfielder. He is currently a first-team coach at Oldham Athletic so able to relay the professional game to the players from every aspect.

Richie coaches edukickBeginning his career at Manchester United, Richie has played at Blackpool, winning promotion with them in 2001, with Oldham making 87 appearances, Doncaster rovers once again winning promotion with them and Leicester City. After a short loan spell at Ipswich Richie re-joined Doncaster in 2013 for a season before moving to Shrewsbury then Salford City. After finishing his playing career, Richie took up coaching through the PFA coach education scheme and is now first team coach at Oldham Athletic.

After the guest session from Richie, the Edukick boys were then put into a showcase game, under the watchful eye of one of the Oldham Athletic academy head coaches, Professional Football Scouts association (PFSA) representation Adam, one of the Manchester City academy coaches and the Radcliffe Borough head coach. In a very competitive game the players showed great ability, impressing the on looking representatives with some real success.

The PFSA have requested the details of one of our players, hoping to take him to some of the semi-professional and lower league clubs in the northwest for trials. Oldham Athletic have offered for a number of the players to be invited into the academy during September to train with the teams to see what a club training environment is like and test their ability against some of the best in the area. This will give those players a real opportunity to level themselves against players who have been signed by a professional club and enable the boys to sample first-hand what level they need to get to, to compete.

Adam Hobson at Showcase eventOverall the showcase event was a great success for the  EduKick Manchester Academy enabling players to have an opportunity to showcase their ability and from it 5 positive results of players progressing on for further trials or training opportunities.

    Manchester City Academy v EduKick

The final game of the season was a visit to Etihad Campus on Wednesday 14th June looking to better our previous performances at the ground. The lads were in positive mood after a long, physical term and wanted to finish the term strong with a win. Edukick, like in many performances over the term dominated possession and created lots of scoring opportunities in front of goal. During a 20 minute period of the first half the game resembled a basketball match, with end to end attacking from both teams. Somehow the lads came into half time 3-0 down with the City team being more clinical where it mattered. During the break it was a case of picking the lads up and reminding them of all the good work they had done over the season and digging deep during the second half to finish on a positive. Indeed the lads did this and were soon level with goals from, Ibrahim, Jaimie and Ha soon after the restart. This clearly affected the opposition as Edukick went searching for more goals. Four goals were scored again in quick succession, two coming from both teams leaving the score at 5-5, Matthew and Hang Su the scorers. The game was in the 89th minute when Edukick had worked the ball well into the opposition box, pressing for the winner with the ball in front of goal cramp struck our striker who fell to the ground, City regained possession, broke quickly and found the back of the net. Final result 6-5, disappointed by the score the lads were praised for the commitment, energy and work ethic shown not just during the game but throughout the programme.

    Final Score 6-5
